
The Flying Sikh, as he was popularly known for his feat in field track sprinting, Milkha Singh left us today at the age of 91. The veteran sportsman had recovered from COVID-19 only four days ago and had been shifted from the ICU to be kept under observation. He succumbed to post-COVID complications and passed away in the hospital in Chandigarh.

His son, golfer Jeev Milkha Singh confirmed the news to The Times of India. The family was coming to terms with the loss of Milkha Singh’s wife, Nirmal Kaur who passed away due to COVID-19 only a week ago at the age of 85. Keeping the sprinter and his family in prayers, people sent in their prayers and love with messages on social media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his condolence message and said, “In the passing away of Shri Milkha Singh Ji, we have lost a colossal sportsperson, who captured the nation’s imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians. His inspiring personality endeared himself to millions. Anguished by his passing away.”
