Gulabo Sitabo actress Farrukh Jaffar passes away


Farrukh Jaffar who played the livewire wife to Amitabh Bachchan in Gulabo Sitabo, passed away last night. The actress was aged 89 years and had some health issues due to which she left us for heavenly abode.

Her elder daughter Mehru Jaffar spoke to a national daily and gave out a statement about her demise. She said that Farrukh Jaffar was admitted to the hospital on October 4th due to breathlessness. She was not well and her lungs were not able to take the oxygen that was given to her. She passed away last evening around 6 pm. The final rites will take place this morning.

Even Jaffar’s grandson took to his social media and shared the news. Her grandson Shaaz Ahmad said, “My grandmother and wife of Freedom fighter, Ex MLC Mr S.M.Jaffar and Veteran Actress Mrs Farrukh Jafar passed away today at 7 pm in Lucknow.”

Farrukh Jaffar has been in the industry since 1981. Her first role was in Rekha starrer Umrao Jaan, where she played Rekha’s mother. She was also one of the first radio announcers of Vividh Bharti Lucknow in 1963. Later she did several roles like in Swades (2004), Sultan (2016) and even in Peepli Live (2010).  She also played Nawazuddin Siddiqui's grandmother in Photograph. Her act in Gulabo Sitabo remains to be the most memorable one for which she even bagged the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female). The actress in her award winning speech had shared that there is no age limit for dreams.

As screenplay writer of Piku and Gulabo Sitabo – Juhi Chaturvedi said in her post for Jaffar – ‘dil se shukriya jo aapne humko aapse rishta jodne ki ijaazat di… ab allah ki uss duniya mein hifaazat se rahiyega…’
